Ad watchdog dismisses complaints against ‘uncomfortable and unpleasant’ Man proof your car ads
The ad watchdog has dismissed a large number of complaints against MyPlates’ recent ‘Man proof your car campaign‘ which showed one man breaking wind and another picking his nose despite noting the subject matter is “uncomfortable and unpleasant for many viewers”.
Mumbrella understands the Ad Standards Board (ASB) received more than 350 complaints against the campaign, with MyPlates CEO Daryl Head telling Mumbrella he was “upset” that the campaign sparked such controversy.
Complaints to the ASB regarding the ad featuring a man picking his nose included one person who said: “It made me feel ill. What are we going to have to watch next in the interest of retail sales? Someone inserting a tampon?”
Oh well done ASB.
Now let’s do an ad featuring swivel-eyed black folks singing about cotton picking and watermelons, and you won’t be blocking that, will you?
That’s “uncomfortable and unpleasant”, isn’t it?
But that’s okay because only selected people have the imagined right to not be offended.
Isn’t that your new “standard”?
The broad majority of taxpayers have no rights whatsoever, while the Nanny State luvvies on the ASB get to indulge their selective prejudices.
The wowsers will be gutted.
Just shows that He moves in mysterious ways.
These ads express opinions, and the opinions are that women will want pink registration plates or plates with high heeled shoes etc, and the reason they should buy them is to prevent their male husband, male partner, male significant other etc. from sharing or even occasionally using their car.
Why? Because men will do something gross and anti social in the precious atmosphere of their cars. Such as fart and/or rub snot on and into the upholstery.
The Board considered “that, while some people may be offended by the depiction of a man in this way, the advertiser’s use of a man is not a depiction that is demeaning or negative”
Not demeaning? Well, it;s hardly supportive, and If it’s not negative, how does it support the positive reasons for purchase of the product? i.e. Man-proofing the car.
I think the ads are unfair to both men and women actually, but they do tend towards sanctifying women and demonizing men in this case.
I can see the humour in it, I actually laughed uncontrollably when he wiped his finger on the door, it reminded me of a 3 year old man child.
But I will be the first to say the ads themselves make me feel really uncomfortable and make me squirm for the duration.
Shock value sells, its the new Sex.
Oh thank f*** for that.
Good on you ASB.
You have to be able to spot these evangelically-driven campaigns that are trying to drive us back to the 1950s, and not fall for them.

I think people just need to lighten up. As a male, I found nothing wrong with these ads!
I thought it was very funny. Men being offended by that , must have a very low self esteem. Somebody noted a while back, Australia is becoming such a sterile community as no ripple on the water is allowed anymore.
Really, be a man and take a bit of mockery!! Poking a bit of fun out of each other gives a bit of spark between male and female. This only says, men are bit more rough around the edges …. so what the heck??? Dark is the day if we women cannot claim to be the more tasteful sophisticated, sexier, softer, neater, prettier, smarter whatever sex anymore.!!
Stop being such wet pants!
