UPDATE: Alan Jones charged with 24 offences by NSW Police
After being arrested at his home in Circular Quay on Monday morning, NSW Police have charged Alan Jones with a total of 24 offences over historic sexual assault allegations.
As per a NSW Police statement made on Monday afternoon, Child Abuse Squad detectives have charged Jones over “alleged historic indecent assault and sexual touching offences”.
“The man was taken to Day Street Police Station, where he was charged with a total of 24 offences against eight victims, including 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault- victim under authority of offender, nine counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexually touch another person without consent and two counts of common assault,” the statement reads.
“He was granted conditional bail, to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 18 December 2024.”
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the arrest took place on Monday morning, and Jones was taken to Day Street police station in Sydney for questioning.
Jones’ arrest comes after a nine-month investigation by Strike Force Bonnefin, a team set up within the State Crime Command’s child abuse and sex crimes squad.
The allegations span back to 1965, when Jones was a 23-year-old teacher at Brisbane Grammar.
In a statement issued on Monday morning, NSW Police said that the arrest came after an investigation into ” alleged indecent assault and sexual touching offences spanning two decades”.
“In March 2024, State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad established Strike Force Bonnefin to investigate a number of alleged indecent assaults and sexual touching incidents between 2001 and 2019,” the statement reads.
“Following extensive inquiries, about 7.45am today (Monday 18 November 2024), strike force detectives executed a search warrant at a unit in Circular Quay where they arrested an 83-year-old man.”
A search warrant is underway.
Jones joined the newly-formed Australian Digital Holdings in 2021, where he hosted a new show titled Alan Jones: Direct To The People. Following the latest series of allegations, Jones was removed from air – he has not been seen publicly since.
