Andrew Jaspan of The Conversation in today’s live video stream
Andrew Jaspan, who edited The Age, The Observer and The Scotsman before founding The Conversation, will take part in today’s Tuesday Hangout live on Mumbrella.
During the video stream – due to start live on this page at 3pm Eastern – Jaspan will discuss how he started The Conversation, which celebrates its second birthday next week. The fast-growing site delivers the insights of academics and the research community to a mainstream audience. It is funded by some of Australia’s major universities.
Jaspan is one of the few editors from a print heritage who has successfully reinvented himself for the digital world. Last month, his claims that Fairfax Media was effectively merging his former paper The Age with the Sydney Morning Herald were rejected by the company.
Michelle Grattan is a fantastic journalist but she’s not an academic. I think she might have been parachuted into a university to be able to contribute. How will you prevent someone like Michelle writing he said/she said journalism? She is putting up an article every day
Congratulations on the Conversation. It has lessened my dependence on The Economist and The New Scientist and the like.
Please can you do something about TV news, which is largely unwatchable.
I’d like to hear more from The Conversation’s deputy editors—mainly Gillian Terzis. Her grasp of everything from fringe economic theories to Twitter is extraordinary!
The Conversation provides a unique and inspiring perspective on modern journalism. As Al Jazeera Senior Editor Dr. Steve Brule puts it, ‘To get an audience to check it out, one must prove one’s credibility as a source worthy of checking in.’
Can a better system for this be set up? Perhaps you could have a call for questions the day before since not everyone can come on and watch a video during work hours. There’s been a few times now that I’ve wanted to contribute but have missed out.

Fair question.
To be honest, we were deliberately low key about our first few Hangouts as we were inexperienced, and wanted to learn as we go. We are beginning to hit our stride a little more now, so probably will start making more noise about forthcoming Hangouts. (Next week’s theme is the Communications Council’s Circus event).
