Australian Open dominates ratings on day one

The first day of the Australian Open has dominated television ratings, but the Big Bash cricket on Seven hurt viewership during the key Sunday evening match-up between the world number one and an Aussie hopeful.

The Australian Open’s day session — which started at 11am on Sunday — was the day’s most-watched program according to Oztam ratings, with over 2.5 million people tuning in at some point throughout the session, with 723,000 tennis fans also checking out the matches on Nine’s Gem station.

Over the seven-hour day session, an average of 444,000 were watching on the main channel at any given time, with a further 85,000 tuning into Gem.
