Dr Mumbo’s ‘sports’ report: Media owners take on agencies at Big Clash cricket
And so to the catchily named Sydney University Oval Number 1 (if ever there was a sports ground calling for a corporate sponsor, this is it) for the biggest sporting event of the year so far, the Big Clash cricket.
Rivalries were put aside in the name of industry charity UnLtd as two teams, one made up of media agency staff and another of media owners, took to the field on a scorching afternoon in Sydney’s inner west, where the thermometer topped 38 degrees.

This is Australia Dr Mumbo – wickets for runs please.
I can’t put my finger on it, but both team photos remind me of a certain Leo Burnett photo. I guess none of the women could make it.
Similarities – that’s funny. Why don’t you pull your finger “out” rather than put it “on” something and better “the blokes” with 30K for UnLtd and young people in need with a unisex fundraiser or whatever it is you think is better and will work. That would be excellent. I was there last night and yep the players were all blokes. Plenty of women in the stand enjoying themselves from what I could see. But the crazy thing is this discussion came up last night after the game with a couple of the players (blokes), questioning whether they should continue The Big Clash Fundraiser because it was boys raising funds to help those less fortunate than us. I’m all for it continuing – and if women want to play that’s brilliant (I don’t – can’t bat, can’t bowl – although yesterday’s match was actually really good). There were a couple of young people there from the Desert Pea Media program last night who talked a bit about their background and how they’ve hauled themselves out of a tough environment through initiatives from Desert Pea. Rather than spray all over some genuine work, why not add to it with another initiative that might meet different gender standards. Get out and do rather than slag I say. May the Big Clash Continue. And tip of the hat to the companies/people that supported and got involved. And to UnLtd and Desert Pea Media – excellent work.
Jane Huxley @ Pandora – you were there yesterday – what’s your take?
Can’t say I’m the world’s greatest cricketer, but I do get tired of seeing ‘company’ representative teams that are filled with men. Why not a mixed cricket team? Mixed volleyball? Netball? Soccer? Are they trying to tell me that not one woman is interested in sport at any of these agencies?
Or are they discouraged from participating and their only role is to turn up and cheer on the boys?
Yep I was there, and it was a pleasure to see so many (likely incredibly busy) men out there on the pitch in what was literally 41 degrees of heat. Personally I found it hard to choose between the fine assortment of canapes/free bar/BBQ/Pandora DJ to be too concerned with the gender on the pitch.
The good lord of mobile Apps was indeed smiling on those of us in the pavilion in the form of the LIve Score App as we were able to keep up with the performances of the brave, and seem somewhat knowledgeable without really knowing about, um what was it again…. cricket??
Charity does not need to be an accretive sport – the more the merrier. Let those who organise be the first to throw stones, and those who merely observe can get int the volunteers queue behind me.
PS I used to be a pretty good netballer too. I’m in.
