Campaign group pushes for Sandilands boycott to stretch into 2012
Several brands have indicated that they will prolong their boycott of Southern Cross Austereo’s Kyle & Jackie O Show into next year.
According to a statement this afternoon from activist website Change.org, which has been leading the protest against the controversial breakfast presenter, Coles, Bunnings, Vodafone, McDonalds, Ford and Blackmores, have all stated that their ads will not be on the show when it returns in the New year.
The boycott of Sandilands kicked off after he launched into an on air personal attack on News Limited journalist Alison Stephenson after she reported his TV show’s poor reception from viewers.
According to Change.org: “The announcements counter suggestions by some industry commentators that the advertising backlash against Sandilands, sparked by his on-air attack on a female journalist, would be temporary. It also comes at the time of year when broadcasters traditionally try to lock in long-term advertising contracts for 2012.”
Other brands that Change.org says are also boycotting the Today Network show next year include CUA, Tourism NSW, University of NSW, NIDA, Beaurepaires, Amex, GIO, Libra and the Art Gallery of NSW.
Train smash for Austereo
BONZA
sounds as if the Mayan year is up and running
long may it continue
I can’t see those brands making much of dent in the revenue. Nor can I see congruency between the listening demographic and the brands listed.
Call me a skeptic, but I think the brands noted were all probably cutting spending anyway and are happy to attach themselves to this issue.
From what I think I know
Tourism NSW – budget cuts
UNSW – Oversea enrollments ($$$$) down near 30%
AMEX – taking a shellacking in rev and market share
Art Gallery of NSW – massive massive spenders of advertising……..
Buy hey maybe I have spent too long in the industry…..
KICK KYLIE OUT!
So it’s rather nice for Coles, Bunnings and MAccas to say Kyle doesn’t fit in their brand values etc. But aren’t they responsible for destroying small business’s and manufacturing and brands by making price the common denominator…
hypocritical
I should add I was writing about the second group of advertisers.
Coles, Bunnings, Vodafone, McDonalds, Ford and Blackmores, will all be back once the heat has gone out of this. (not saying it is right, but it is reality)
Look, I’m no fan of Sandilands, but he is a “shock jock” and their his opinions. He’s paid to be loud and controversial (and that’s why he has the highest rating breakfast show in arguably the toughest radio market in the world). Life’s going to be pretty beige if we go about banning anyone who’s not towing the PC line. Who, then, would we have to whinge about?
Can you see Austereo shaking in their boots? Kyle is not the only one who makes degrading or insulting comments.
Hey KD…I agree with what you say – about Kyle being a “shock jock” therefore inclined to be “controversial”. But I don’t agree with this being PC at all.
It’s about a loud-mouth bully who didn’t like his TV show criticised by a jorno and then trashed that jorno in a very ugly way.
Kyle can still do (and no doubt will still do) his “thang”. But if he can’t take a bit of stick, then he should get out of the kitchen…or the studio!
Looks like SCA are taking this quite seriously:
