What can marketers learn from Game of Thrones
In this guest post, which promises to be spoiler-free, Atomic 212’s Aline Eloy says winter is coming for some of the country’s biggest agencies, and the lessons contained in HBO’s television blockbuster Game of Thrones could hold all the answers.
Firstly, let’s be absolutely crystal about this: this piece will contain absolutely zero spoilers.
Whatever point you are up to in your Game of Thrones experience – and seriously, if you haven’t sat down to either flick through a book or watch a few episodes, you’re just doing leisure wrong – this is a solemn promise that you won’t have anything ruined here. But even speaking in the broadest of terms, there’s some great lessons to be learnt from the machinations occurring in George RR Martin’s fictional world of Westeros.
In fact, there’s even been a book published about the broader knowledge to be gleaned from the show and the books which inspired it, Game of Thrones and Philosophy: Logic Cuts Deeper Than Swords.
1. This article is hackneyed and at least 3 years out of date. Eg. http://blogs.gartner.com/richa.....f-thrones/
2. Why get inspiration from exactly the same pool as the rest of the industry.
Boring.
Thanks for the great read!
“for a lot of the biggest agencies in the world, winter hit in the past few years, and they were so busy enjoying what they perceived to be an endless summer that they were left reeling”…
We’recoming up on season 7 of a show based on books that were first released over 20 years ago.
But no, you’re right, that dude who wrote an obscure blog post in 2014 was clearly the first person to see lessons that translate across, and therefore everyone else is a hack.
In fact, anyone who ever talks about anything that’s ever been said before – by anyone, ever – is just the worst.
Come to think of it Dave, I’ve read all those words you used in your comment. Like, not in that order, but I’ve definitely seen them ALL before.
That’s some weak sauce dude. Come up with original words – everyone in the industry gets inspiration from the English language. They have done forever. It’s just getting boring.
@Dave’s right, this article is poorly and tenuously written.
@Dave … get over yourself mate. The piece is clearly meant to be a bit of fun in the build up to GoT in a couple of months, and it STILL gets some very pertinent points across about the industry. Another troll getting his kicks by knocking down people who actually CREATE something. Yeah, you’re a real winner buddy.
Really great read, thanks Aline. Some good lessons in marketing and great talking points for the future. Also, SO KEEN FOR SEASON 7!
