Daniel Sankey defects from The New Daily to be News.com.au editor
News Corp Australia has poached the editor of news website The New Daily Daniel Sankey to be the new editor of News.com.au, Mumbrella can reveal.
The defection is a major blow for the new The New Daily which only launched three months ago in a move funded by the superannuation industry.
Sankey is also a former online editor of The Age. He replaces Luke McIlveen who left News.com.au in December to run the Mail Online.
As Mumbrella revealed yesterday, News.com.au’s flagship news website has been faced with a series of defections with afternoon editor Chris Paine and reporters Candace Sutton and Sarah Michael departing recently to go to Mail Online.
It’s spelled “Sankey”.
You spelt his name wrong. It’s Sankey.
Weird choice. The New Daily has been an abysmal failure.
For all the talk of “old media” dying a slow death, its telling to see these new media darlings heading back to the big media mastheads. We love to hate them, but they obviously have a great deal of appeal if these guys are moving their careers to these media brands and audiences.
Just a thought.
Gee, he didn’t last in start up land for long. FYI – we heard Fairfax recommended Daniel to NEWS! How funny
Go Sanks!!
Sankey is the second former editor of theage.com.au to take on the news.com.au role. News know they get good talent from Fairfax. He’ll do fine.
Does that mean News is about to take a sharp left turn?
”While we are disappointed to lose Daniel from The New Daily, his appointment speaks volumes about the strength of the site’s launch,” Er, no Bruce, the fact Sankey is defecting so soon after launch of The New Daily suggests the exact opposite. How’s your traffic and revenue going BTW?
whats the best way to figure out the traffic for the New Daily? I reackon the initial 15,000 odd sign ups have dropped.
