David Jones gets mixed reaction on Facebook for its choice of Adam Goodes as ambassador
A heated debate has broken out on the Facebook page of department store David Jones over its choice of former AFL player Adam Goodes as its new brand ambassador.
It is the first brand ambassador role for the former Australian of the Year since he retired from football last month, after a season in which he was the subject of booing from fans during games which some said was racially motivated.
However that booing has now spilled over onto the brand’s Facebook page, where a number of people have reacted negatively to the decision.

The types of bogans boooooing at this aren’t DJ shoppers. Their angst will strengthen others support. It’s bold, it’s clever and will work for favourability in the lead up to xmas.
Absolutely mauls the common excuse that racists were using, saying the boos were just part and parcel of football. As someone remarked on twitter, “on a positive note, with racists boycotting David Jones, shoplifting will drop by 100%”
Anyone who makes controversial comments on a public Facebook page isn’t too smart.
Well I feel totally validated. I have said to anyone who will listen that the booing of Adam was due to being indigenous. Seems I was correct. It is not about football now.
Adam Goodes aside, the campaign isn’t particularly strong from a fashion perspective. Style has taken a back seat to a Performance – a theme that isn’t typically associated with high-end fashion.
Will be interesting to watch how committed Woolworths SA are to this direction for the brand. In comparison to WHL’s other brands, it’s certainly a departure.

It never was about football. Great choice DJ’s, I shopped there yesterday.
I agree with Bigger Picture. Not a strong campaign and (in my view) not likely to translate into sales. Goodes controversy aside, it’s all feeling irrelevant.
Perhaps without the Goodes controversy this campaign might have gone unnoticed.
Which makes the controversy a kind of happy coincidence doesn’t it?

David Jones has a Reconciliation Action Plan? What th? I thought they were a department store? Someone’s lost the plot big time.
It was a pretty smart move in terms of the social media engagement alone. Had a look last night and had to move quite the way through to find the negative sentiment.
There are elements of Australian society that believe the indigenous population should quietly carry on suffering, be rarely seen and certainly not heard. When a proud indigenous man has the temerity to stand up and point out racist hypocrisy he is vilified for it. This is such a disgraceful episode that the AFL did nothing to combat and so it goes on as if it some how has a legitimate voice. I for one congratulate David Jones for selecting a man of rare principle and courage to be their ambassador.
Steve Rushdie….a RAP is not uncommon in corporate Australia and should be welcomed as it recognises that social change takes effort.

Only difference being that one ad is freshly minted while the other was made in 2013. All the more hilarious that DJ’s stocks this fragrance. Why create when you can copy, right?
