‘It doesn’t sound right anymore’: Australian Republic Movement launches major brand push
The Australian Republic Movement is calling on Australians to declare their independence from the British monarchy this Australia Day, as part of a major rebrand and renewed push for the movement.
Created by McCann Melbourne, the refresh is the biggest brand push for the ARM since it ran its campaign for the 1999 National Referendum.
The spot features a range of Australians from various backgrounds attempting to recite the words to the British national anthem, and former Australian anthem, ‘God Save the Queen’, with little success. It concludes with the text: “It doesn’t sound right anymore”.

So the pitch was “let’s prove our point by making people try and sing something that hasn’t been our anthem for 32 years”?
What a redundant campaign.
“It doesn’t sound right anymore”
That’s probably why it hasn’t been the national anthem for three decades.
What a pointless ad. Of course it doesn’t sound right anymore as it’s not Australia’s anthem. Unfortunately for the ARM marriage equality has taken over as the major diversionary political topic capturing the interest of Australians and non-government politicians.
Since when do kids get their hair cut at an old barber shop?
The ARM doesn’t need a logo, what it neeeds is a flag, a symbol that the people can rally around. I suggest a flag of Indigo Blue background with the stars of the Southern Cross in gold and a gold Federation Star to replace the Union Jack
Nothing wrong with the current Australian flag. Hands off it.
The flags gotta go, sorry. The future Republic of Australia needs a new flag and new anthem, possibly even a new name.
The ARM as usual do not have a clue.
The British identity of our head of state is a minor issue compared to the role and powers of the position under our present Constitution. Try reading our Constitution. You will find that 43 of its sections – one third – confer powers or a role on the monarch or her representatives.
It is Crown power which is the issue. Unless you can say what should happen to each Crown power when we remove the Queen, then you do not have a viable alternative.
Fortunately the Advancing Democracy model does this, no thanks to the ARM, which continues to mislead people into thinking this is merely about identity – a peripheral issue.
