Facebook rejects SCA boss’ accusation of misleading small business advertisers
Facebook has defended its Community Boost program against claims its team is misrepresenting the effectiveness of radio and television against online advertising.
Speaking to Fairfax earlier this week, Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) CEO Grant Blackley claimed Facebook considered small and medium enterprises to be a ‘goldmine’ for potential advertising dollars, with the social media company misrepresenting its market reach and effectiveness.

Facebook head of policy, Mia Garlick: “We recognise the value of radio as an advertising platform”
“Facebook has been doing a regional roadshow trying to convince all of the small and medium enterprises that they’re the only thing that exists in the world [to advertise on], which we know to be untrue,” Blackley told Fairfax.

Getting interesting. Not sure Facebook has form on what it says publicly about itself v what it does.
Why can’t Facebook provide an alternative to radio in regional areas? Who says they (or any other new media company) have to leave regional to traditional companies? It’s very easy for traditional media to attack new media like this. Rather than focus on improving their service offering, better ratings, proving effectiveness… let’s just jump on the FB bashing bandwagon because we know it plays well in the trade press…
Facebook does not only mislead advertisers with false potential reach, Facebook also misleads advertisers with false advertising results!
I boosted 2 posts for 3 days, the total number of LINK clicks according to Facebook was 277 link clicks on one post and 416 link clicks on the second post, a total of 693 link clicks. Checking both Google analytics and another program, the total clicks (including organic and other traffic sources!) for the same period was 117, not even a quarter of what Facebook reports. Very misleading and no doubt on purpose to make their advertising seem more effective than it is in reality. Facebook = Digital crooks!
