Fairfax appoints Cosima Marriner as Sun-Herald editor

Cosima Marriner has been appointed editor of Fairfax’s Sun-Herald, replacing Liam Phelan who had held the role for the previous two years.

Marriner will take over the role in the middle of next month ahead of a revamp of the Sunday masthead that will see a focus on breaking stories and a refresh of several sections.

I’m sure Cosima is a very competent journalists/editor, but the job she’s taking on is something of a poisoned chalice. SH Circulation, advertising, revenue have been in terminal decline for years. Every couple of years Fairfax changes editor, announces a revamp, but the decline continues. I can’t imagine the title is profitable any more.
