Fairfax splits Domain Group financials from publishing division and announces $1bn in write downs
Fairfax Media has moved to split its Domain Group away from its Australia Metro Media division ahead of the company’s financial results announcement next Wednesday.
The move fuels speculation that Fairfax will split the property classified site away altogether and float it as a separate entity in a bid to maximise its revenues and share price.
The publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age has also said it will make nearly $1bn of write-downs for the value of its metro, regional and New Zealand publishing divisions, citing the split out of Domain and challenging market conditions for the move.

Hywood is trying to move the cheese. The domain “segment” is nothing new. It’s been highlighted for some time. But it’s not a business because it is clearly tied to the publishing platforms. Otherwise it would have a balance sheet and P+L. What Hywood has yet to explain is: what happens to domain revenues when the domain print ads sink with the newspapers?
Looks very much like a pea under a thimble. Suddenly it will just disappear.
How’s that Allure Media investment going? Oh that’s right, it’s bundled into Digital Ventures so it’s impossible to know…
PopSugar, ShopStyle etc are nothing more than advertiser-funded clickbait factories attempting to be content publishers.
Then there’s Hywood’s Netus acquisition that was always strangely silent on details. What has that actually contributed to Fairfax? It was supposed to be a digital tech investment, but we’ve not seen or heard much of it since 2012.
As for floating Domain. We’ve hit the peak of the market for realestate growth, so it’s now or never….
..and while we’re at it: how’z all those other much vaunted new revenue streams going : small business marketing, events and content marketing? Haven’t heard or seen anything about these since they were announced three years ago — so have to assume they’re not exactly moving the dial for Fairfax.

Vendors are starting to push back at the extremely high advertising costs put in front of them for online sites and for print when they sell their property – they cannot justify the expenditure when a listing is a listing on the web and they know that if someone is looking for a property, they will look at everything in the market – not just the one with the biggest ad. The two main sites rely upon vendor paid advertising as do their print publications….
Nothing new from Hywood. They are really clutching at straws now in order to eke out any last remaining value. The Life Media & Events division is in turmoil. The Australian media section today claims inside sources are suggesting that Andrew McEvoy could be the next CEO. He might be protected as Hywoods mate but surely that can’t be correct given his performance. Now supposedly Drive is the next big thing? What about Bodypass, Juice Daily etc. Any word update on these financials please?
