Fairfax’s junior journalist program
A program run by Fairfax and Express Media is looking for high-school aged journalist wannabes to contribute to the website The Under Age.
The Under Age is looking for up to six writers to write for the website for up to one year while being mentored by experienced journalists.
Joe Toohey, CEO of Express Media CEO, said while the students wouldn’t be paid, they would get to participate in 20 to 24 workshops with employed journalists.
“The Under Age was set up in 2011 as a way to give young people a structured introduction to the industry.
Although an admiral venture, it seems strange in view of the spate of the savage journalist lay-offs and closures we’re seeing at present. It’s a bit like encouraging kids to have a career in the Australian car industry, really….

Who’d have guessed? How about we start teaching professional commercial practice as part of training programs. That wild notion that your labour and time earns rewards should still apply. When I were lad we weren’t so poor that we had to lick tar off road. Tell that to young people today and they won’t believe you.
