Federal government moves to act on Wicked Campers ‘misogynistic’ and ‘vulgar’ signage
Controversial van hire company Wicked Campers is in the sights of the Federal government with Minister for Women, Kelly O’Dwyer, calling for state and national authorities to work together against the company’s “outdated, misogynistic, vulgar and degrading signage.”
The call to action comes after the Ad Standards Board upheld 15 complaints about the company’s vans during 2018 for offensive murals around topics including childbirth, drug use and masturbation.
All this attention is doing wicked campers a service. Is their advertising offensive? Yes, it is to some, but above all, it’s tasteless and low brow.
Right now, it is an easy target for politicians to reference for the purpose of grandstanding. “Misogyny” is a word hurled around by female politicians whenever they want attention, but the word refers to the hatred of women, which in any society is very rare, perhaps as rare as Misandry, which is so rare we hardly ever hear about it. “Masturbation” is an arresting word, but in an era where the “Rabbit” and sundry other vibratory implements are advertised, the word is hardly considered vulgar today.
