Gillard’s rise smashes records for Australia’s news sites

SMH_Rudd_home_page_MumbrellaThis morning’s dramatic departure of outgoing PM Kevin Rudd and replacement with Julia Gillard has smashed traffic records for Australia’s news websites, outstripping even the death of Michael Jackson and the Black Saturday bushfires.

Gillard’s rise as the first female Australian Prime Minister saw, for the first time, Fairfax Digital Media’s smh.com.au exceed more than one million page impressions per hour for two consecutive hours between 9am and 11am.

Both smh.com.au and theage.com.au recorded their highest traffic spikes on record between 8am and 11am today, and posted their highest ever page impressions and unique browsers.

Fairfax’s recent deal with to show Ten News video content also paid off with live streaming news and background packages.
