Guardian Australia takes on former News Corp audio GM as advertising head

News company Guardian Australia has announced that it has hired Shannon Hollis to fill the role of head of advertising.

With more than 15 years of experience in the advertising space, Hollis’ most recent position was general manager of audio (acting) at News Corp, having stepped into the role after serving as the organisation’s head of commercial audio for two years.

Officially joining News Corp in 2019, Hollis’ more than five-year stint at the company saw her grow its podcasting capabilities, particularly in the areas of advertising, audience growth, subscriptions, content and product innovation. Her work resulted in News Corp’s advertising revenue increasing, and an expansion of its podcasting portfolio to an output of 80 episodes each week.

“We are thrilled to welcome Shannon to Guardian Australia,” said Guardian Australia’s managing director, Rebecca Costello.

“Her leadership, strategic mindset, and proven track record in driving commercial growth will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our advertising partnerships. Shannon’s diverse experience in audio and digital media makes her the perfect fit to lead our dynamic team.”

Hollis’ career has seen her work overseas in London as well as in Australia. From March 2013 to the end of 2018, she held various managerial and director titles at Hearst UK, allowing her to work with significant brands – Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Prada, H&M, and more – as clients. She has also worked with national companies in partnership capacities, such as Harvey Norman and Optus.

When commenting on her new appointment, Hollis said it “is an incredible opportunity” to be attached to a brand that is well-known for being trustful.

“I’m excited to be joining Guardian Australia as head of advertising. This is an incredible opportunity to work for a brand that is deeply trusted by both advertisers and audiences. I look forward to expanding the commercial digital suite,” Hollis said.

The audio and advertising expert’s Sydney-based gig will officially commence on October 14, 2024.

Hollis’ hiring comes almost one week after it was reported that Guardian Australia had doubled its profits despite “an advertising downturn”.
