‘It’s great that Channel Copycat is just taking something we’ve done for 18 years’: Eddie McGuire slams Nine presenters moving to Seven

Eddie McGuire has slammed the hosts of longstanding Channel Nine show, Footy Classified, for defecting to Seven, calling the rival network “Channel Copycat” in a live spray on the Today show on Thursday morning.

McGuire’s comments were targeted at three of the Footy Classified hosts – Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison – who will be defecting to Seven next year.

While it is already known that Cornes is moving over, Wilson and Hutchison’s departure from Nine is yet to be publicly confirmed. Although neither network is keen to confirm the move, it seems McGuire has done so on live television.

Sarah Abo asked McGuire about “some of your other footy colleagues,” asking “What is going on? It’s been busy for you down there.”

McGuire used to chance to take aim at his former colleagues.

“End of the season, you get rid of the list-cloggers and you move the new superstars in,” he said.

“And that’s what we’re doing. The Footy Classified with Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison. That started 18 years ago. We commissioned it when I was up in Sydney, actually.

“And it’s been fantastic. And it’s great that Channel Copycat is just taking something we’ve done for 18 years and putting it on air.

“So that’s okay. While they’re doing that, we’ll come up with something fresh, new and exciting for next year and do what we always do.”

The trio are expected to move to Seven in 2025 as part of a refreshed AFL coverage line-up.

Fellow Footy Classified host, Matthew Lloyd told 3AW on Monday: “I’m bitterly disappointed but no one is bigger than the show.”

It has also been reported that Hutchinson’s TV company, Rainmaker, will produce AFL shows for Seven next year.

Nine declined to comment when contacted by Mumbrella.
