James Chessell appointed as Fairfax’s group executive editor, Australian Metro Publishing
Fairfax Media has appointed James Chessell as its group executive editor of Australian Metro Publishing.
Chessell was previously the national editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age with responsibilities spanning federal politics, business and world coverage.

Fairfax is currently in the process of recruiting a new national editor
So News is finally cutting its bureaucracy while Fairfax adds a layer. We have wonder whether Hywood would be better suited in the public service. Certainly not behaving like a company that has to reinvent its business.
A very long time ago, when the SMH had hundreds of reporters and The Age had hundreds of reporters and the AFR had maybe a hundred reporters and there was The National Times and so on, Max Suich had a title like this one. Max was very good at lunch. Not very good at getting yelled at by Keating. Or chatting up UK newspaper proprietors. I wonder who Chessell has lunch with? Cato? Or Clegg?
