Little Women takes $3.34m at weekend box office, but can’t topple Jumanji
The third instalment of the Jumanji series, Jumanji: The Next Level, has held firm to the top of the Australian box office in its second weekend outing, taking in over $7m from 647 screens.
The film starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan as teenagers sucked inside the Jumanji video game, sailed to the top of the weekend box office last week with $13.267m. Its running total has now surpassed $22m.
The action comedy still came out on top of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which drew $4.32m in its third weekend. The ninth episode of the Star Wars series has a running box office total of $39.19m.
After opening on New Year’s Day, the latest take on Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women, earned $3.34m at the Australian box office, making its current total $4.77m.
Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, Emily Watson, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh and Australian Eliza Scanlen, the film appeared on 313 screens over the weekend.
Matthew McConaughey-fronted crime comedy, The Gentlemen, was slightly ahead of Little Women. The film also debuted on the 1 January and drew $3.47m from 374 screens. Its total currently sits at $4.49m.
Behind it was Frozen II, which beat out its 2013 predecessor over the weekend to become the highest grossing animated movie globally of all time. The sequel has now amassed $US1.325bn globally, ahead of the original Frozen which earned $US1.281bn at the box office.
This year’s remake of the Lion King earned US$1.65bn, and despite it being largely computer generated, Disney considers it to be a live action remake of the 1994 animation.
For its sixth weekend in Australia, Frozen 2 earned $1.73m, making its local total $34.62m.
And the embattled Cats drew just $697,880 from 273 screens in its second weekend. The star-studded film, directed by Tom Hooper, attracted ridicule and criticism on social media for the blended use of live action and CGI to make the cast appear like cats. The musical has earned $3.15m in Australia and is reported to be set to lose US$70m for its studio, Universal Pictures.
