Local content quotas pass through Senate during primetime
More quality Australian programming, like Colin From Accounts, will be coming soon
Netflix, Disney, and other large streaming services will be required to invest in Australian productions after the Labor government successfully passed its content quota bill through the Senate during the final hours of parliament for 2025.
The new legislation was tabled just before 7.30 pm on Thursday evening, and will require streaming services with over one million Australian subscribers to spend either 10% of their total local expenditure or 7.5% of their total revenue on new local drama, children’s, documentary, arts, or educational programs.
If a service fails to comply, they face fines of up to ten times their Australian revenue.
