MEAA Federal Secretary Chris Warren to step down at next election
Long serving head of the union representing journalists, actors and musicians Chris Warren has announced he will not contest an upcoming election, Mumbrella can reveal.
Warren has served as secretary of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) for more than 15 years and has been with the union for 27 years.
He told Mumbrella: “It is a difficult decision, but there comes a time to step down. I think the organisation is in a strong position to move forward and move on.
“You only ever hold these things in trust and from the people who come before you, and you hand them on to the people who come after you,” he said.
Clearly the game is up.
No mention of this in today’s newsletter from the union.
Surely the role of federal secretary is an elected one? Don’t we get a vote? No wonder people are leaving the union in droves. I pay $1000+ a year in fees, certainly don’t get $1000+ in value in return.
Good to see. With any luck a new secretary will move MEAA back to focusing on industrial issues. I think they’ve been far too distracted fighting ideological battles while the industry burnt.
Sorry Surly Dave but members do not get a vote when somebody decides not to contest an election. Members get to vote at elections.
The role of Fed Secretary is, of course, elected.
Good time for some new blood and change in the union.
