Media regulation on the agenda at Mumbrella360

mUmBRELLA360logo 2012Key players in the future of press regulation in Australia are to take part in the Mumbrella360 conference in June.

Julian Disney, chairman of the Australian Press Council; Matthew Ricketson, assistant to the Finkelstein Independent Media Inquiry; Campbell Reid, editorial director of News Limited; and Peter Fray, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Sydney Morning Herald, will join a discussion on the future of media regulation.

The session comes at a crucial time for the question of how the press is regulated. The media inquiry last month recommended replacing the Australian Press Council with a new, government funded “enforced self regulation” News Media Council.

Meanwhile, the APC has committed to beefing up its own powers but remaining funded by the journalism industry. Yesterday, the unity of the major publishers on maintaining independent self regulation was undermined with the withdrawal of Seven West Media – owner of The West Australian newspaper and Pacific Magazines – from the APC.
