Meta aids journalist in running scam crypto ads on its platforms

A Reuters investigation shows how easily illegal advertising can be placed onto Facebook and Instagram, with Meta’s official partner agencies and AI tools aiding in the fraud.

Reuters journalist Jeff Horwitz ran cryptocurrency ads promising a weekly return of 10% — with a too-good-to-be-true annualised rate of over 14,000% — in the feeds of more than 20,000 users in the United States, Europe, India and Brazil.

He booked these ads through resellers in Hong Kong and Vietnam, who work with Chinese advertising agencies listed in Meta’s ‘Partner Directory’.
