Mike Fitzpatrick to leave the ABC

Mike Fitzpatrick, the ABC’s head of capital city network and sport (an audio/radio role), will reportedly be leaving the national broadcaster this month.

According to Mediaweek, ABC’s head of audio Ben Latimer confirmed the departure in a staff note, saying Fitzpatrick “has chosen to leave the ABC to focus on his health.”

At the end of the 2024, Fitzgerald was diagnosed with a health condition that forced him to undergo extended hospital stays and take significant time away from work

Fitzpatrick shared his decision with his team in an email, writing, “although I’ve returned over the past weeks, it’s become clear that I’m simply not well enough to work full-time and I need to focus on managing my condition and health.”

Fitzpatrick joined the ABC in February 2024, saying at the time that “growing up in regional NSW, my love of radio was ignited listening to ABC local.”

At the ABC, he was responsible for setting the strategy, brand direction, and editorial priorities for the capital city radio stations, and ABC Sport. Latimer referred to his “exceptional leadership skills” when announcing the hire.

Prior to joining the ABC, Fitzpatrick was content director at Southern Cross Austereo for five years, and head of content at Triple M for a further six-and-a-half years. He moved across to head up Listnr’s digital sport strategy at SCA, before joining Nine Radio in a consultancy role. He won Best Program Director at the ACRAs in 2015.
