Wicked has been all the rage in Australia and around the globe this past week, but this week’s release of the highly-anticipated sequel to Disney’s Moana has made a huge splash.
Released on Thursday, Moana 2 opened to $1.76 million at the Australian box office, making the film the highest grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios opening day of all time.
The number also means Moana 2 has enjoyed the biggest animated opening day post pandemic and the second highest opening day of 2024, only behind the global hit, Deadpool & Wolverine.
The news comes after the CEO of Hoyts Group, Damian Keogh, told Mumbrella that while he was holding out hope for a Barbenheimer-sized success story with Wicked and Gladiator II, he predicted it would be Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Disney that have proved to be the big winners in the back end of 2024.
“Collectively, I don’t know that they’ll get to the box office of Barbenheimer, but then the following week, Moana 2 comes out, where the buzz for that has been unbelievable as well,” he said at the time.
“Collectively, those three movies absolutely have the potential to do the same kind of numbers as Barbenheimer did last year.”
Took the kids along and it was a great show.
