Newscorp’s Michael Miller on ‘the Big Steal’

News Corp Australia’s executive chairman Michael Miller today delivered a speech to the Melbourne Press Club in which he mounted a fierce defence of the Copyright Act. Given the significance of the recent debate around modifying copright law to suit AI developers — and in the spirit of freedom of information — here is the full text of Miller’s address.

Welcome, and thank you to the Melbourne Press Club for hosting me today.

I would like to start by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land on which we meet: the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.

Today I want to talk about the price Australians are being asked to pay by the latest tech revolution.

We are, arguably, being asked to surrender…our stories, our voice, our culture, our identity and, ultimately, our Australianess.
