Nine bundles The Athletic with SMH, Age subscriptions
Nine has teamed with the New York Times to inject more value into its Sydney Morning Herald and Age subscriptions.
From today, premium subscribers of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age will now be given access to sports news site The Athletic, part of the New York Times stable.
The popular US sports site is currently bundled into a New York Times digital subscription, and costs A$3 a month as a standalone subscription. A premium subscription to either the Sydney Morning Herald or The Age is currently priced at $8.70 a week.
Nine has recently bolstered its premium subscription offerings with a refreshed puzzles section, and the launch of the Good Food app. This digital news bundling play mirrors that of the New York Times, who tempt potential subscribers with extras like puzzles (read: Wordle), the NYT Cooking app, exclusive podcasts, and subscriptions to vertical The Athletic and product recommendations hub Wirecutter.
Nine’s executive editor Luke McIlveen, called The Athletic “the world’s best standalone sports site” in a release announcing the deal, explaining the surge in popularity of US sports in Australia makes it “the perfect offering for readers who value quality, trusted journalism.”
Nine’s director of audience growth, Aimie Rigas, adds: “We know there’s huge interest in global sport coverage, and The Athletic delivers the kind of sharp, in-depth coverage our subscribers can’t get enough of.
“It’s the perfect match for our own local sports expertise and a great new perk for our premium subscribers.”

How about considering bundling SMH with AFR. Not enough value for punters to pay for for each
