Nine sales boss: ‘It’s not the 1980s, we should be judged on performance of all our channels’
Nine’s new sales boss has expressed his frustration with the industry focus on the ratings failure of Reno Rumble, arguing the TV network should be judged on its performance across all four of its channels.

Stephenson: “We are demonstrating that we can be nimble enough to adjust the schedule when we need to”
New sales boss Michael Stephenson, who took the sales reins from Peter Wiltshire earlier this month, told Mumbrella: “We recognise how important prime time is, but it is also not the 1980s. There are four channels – and that’s why we invest in having four channels of content: to give Australians a breadth of content to enjoy for free.”
Stephenson’s comments come as media buyers report they are in talks with the TV network around make-goods following the ratings failure of Reno Rumble which, as of next week, will move to the later time slot of 8:50pm on Monday and Tuesday, replaced by Married at First Sight in the key 7:30pm slot.
Why not put Big Bang Theory back where it belongs
Please stop with the renovation shows!
Pretty simple – dont waste money on all the content for the Sub channels and focus on quality NOT quantity….its not hard
“It’s not the 1980s”
Thats a very un-Australian attitude.
I know, keep rolling out the same reality drivel and hope for better results.
“Those are just the facts. Open to close from the beginning of the year to now. Those are the demographics that advertisers care about.” – don’t they care about the shows people actually watch?
what about the 70’s that was my favourite decade. TV ratings would be delivered on a telex machine from Nielsen.
So when they are doing well, they want to report on primetime via media releases etc, but when they are doing bad, it’s all about the multi-channel performance?
80% of their revenue comes from 20% of their shows of which 100% are in prime time.
So, if their prime audience is down 14%……you know what I’m saying…..it’s all bullshit.
So man up Nine and commission some engaging content!
Shit shows deliver shit ratings…..and right now Nine is in deep shit.
No it’s not. the 80’s.
People no longer have to sit through annoying long ad breaks.
They wither zap through them or jump onto social media.
Big problem for commercial broadcasters.
So “Stephenson also challenged the market to look at the network’s overall performance across the whole day in 2016, arguing this should be from the start of the calendar year, rather than the traditional focus on the ratings year.”
The only reason that “the market” used 40 weeks of just 6 hours a day was at the behest of the FTA networks. Moves by media agencies to broaden the “official” basis for viewing shares was derided by the broadcasters.
For the record, Foxtel/MCN adopted “Stephenson’s Challenge” back in 2003.
Just maybe they may now catch up a lost decade and a bit.
