Racist reporting still rife in Australian media
The University of Technology Sydney’s Christina Ho charts the Australia’s media’s failure to fairly represent different racial groups in this crossposting from The Conversation.
In research released this week, the Who Watches the Media report found that of 124 race-related opinion pieces published between January and July this year, 62 were potentially in breach of one or more industry codes of conduct, because of racist content.
Despite multiple industry codes of conduct stipulating fair race-related reporting, racist reporting is a weekly phenomenon in Australia’s mainstream media.
We define racism as unjust covert or overt behaviour towards a person or a group on the basis of their racial background. This might be perpetrated by a person, a group, an organisation, or a system.
The research, conducted by not-for-profit group All Together Now and the University of Technology Sydney, focused on opinion-based pieces in the eight Australian newspapers and current affairs programs with the largest audiences, as determined by ratings agencies.
“We found that negative race-related reports were most commonly published in News Corp publications. The Daily Telegraph, The Australian and Herald Sun were responsible for the most negative pieces in the press. A Current Affair was the most negative among the broadcast media.”
Wow what a surprise! I wonder if Lachlan will be as narrow minded and manipulative as Daddy.

If this isnt a clear message to brand safety advocates of where not to place advertisements, I do not know what is?
I read the “report” linked to in this article. All — not a handful, not some, not most — but ALL instances of so-called “racism” have taken quotes and placed them OUT OF CONTEXT. What a sham!
According to this “report” one of their many definitions of racism is “believing everyone should behave according to certain values, particularly those called ‘national’ but are, in fact, not.”
What rot.
Those “certain values” are codified in our federal and state laws. They do not allow for polygamy. Sharia does. Mormonism does. The “researchers” who compiled this report are calling everyone a “racist” who believes that Muslims, or Mormons, or indeed any follower of any belief system which permits polygamy, should instead abide by Australian values (as codified by our legislatures) which do not permit mutiple marriages.
Definitions aside, I don’t think you could watch some episodes and deny that the shows rhetoric – through its selected subject matter, narrative and presentation – is often geared towards fueling negative sentiments against minorities in Australia.
How many times does it have to be explained for the dummies? “Muslim” is not a race. It is a religion. To equate “racism” in terms of Muslims demonstrates the ignorance of the writer. Further, the word “racism” is utterly subjective, hence its gross over usage. Today it was reported that the Philadelphia authorities have directed small retail businesses to remove all bulletproof glass in their shops, because they declared, “bulletproof glass is racist”. OMG. Enough said.
I love it when people defend “Australian Values” and assimilation when anglos didn’t do any of it.
