Radio ratings: 2GB’s loyal listeners turning off AM and heading to FM

2GB has long dominated Sydney’s airwaves, but after losing first place last survey to KIIS, it’s now the two ‘golden oldies’ stations that are ruling the roost in Sydney.

Sydney

2GB lost a 0.4% share this survey, while KIIS slipped back into third spot, after taking the crown last survey.

WSFM takes top station in Sydney with 10.9% of the listenership, followed by smoothfm, with 10.3%. Could it be that 2GB’s loyal listeners are discovering their wireless can be switched over to the fangled new FM band?

Ray Hadley, who announced his retirement on air last week, slipped to third place in his Mornings slot, behind WSFM and smoothfm – the first time he has lost his timeslot since 2003.

On breakfast, Kyle and Jackie O lost 0.6%, while Ben Fordham on 2GB gained 0.1% – but the KIIS breakfast duo remain 0.8% clear. Coming up as a challenger though is WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda, who gained 0.7%, while NOVA and Triple M’s breakfast teams gained 0.6 and 0.5 respectively.

Could this be the beginnings of the Big Switch™ ©?

Melbourne

Kyle and Jackie O and KIIS may be trumping Ben Fordham and 2GB in Sydney, but they continuously fail to make a dent in the Melbourne breakfast market, sitting at eighth in Breakfast, now slipping well behind the likes of Triple M and ABC Melbourne.

The AM band may be falling out of favour in Sydney, but in Melbourne 3AW still rules the airwaves, being the overall station with 14% of listeners, and commanding a 20% market share in Breakfast – with Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft a massive 9 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Jase and Lauren, who have the top FM breakfast show with 11% of listeners.

BRISBANE

B105 remains the top station in Brisbane, with a 13.1% hold and a 0.9% lead over Triple M, who moved from 11.8% to 12.2% this survey.

B105’s Stav, Abby, and Matt is now 1.8% clear of its competitors in breakfast: Triple M’s Marto, Margaux & Dan and Robin & Kip at KIIS, who are tied for second place.

PERTH

96FM remains the most-listened to station in Perth, however its lead over NOVA decreased from 1.1% to a tighter 0.7%, suggesting some listenership shuffling in play.

Breakfast still belongs to Nova however, with Nathan, Nat and Shaun taking a 4.9% lead over Clairsy & Lisa on 96FM.

ADELAIDE

The kids are ruling Adelaide airwaves, with youth-focused MIX102.3 the overall station, slightly extending its lead over second-place Triple M by 01.% to 0.9%. NOVA dropped 0.3%, and remains comfortably in third place.

Triple M has breakfast wrapped up however, with The Roo, Ditts & Loz taking an extra 1.8% share this survey to hold a 14.8% share. They sit 2.6% clear of nearest rivals, FiveAA’s David Penberthy and Will Goodings on the AM band, who have 12.2%, and 4.2% points ahead of nearest FM competitor: NOVA’s Jodie & Hayesy – who sit in fourth (behind ABC Adelaide in third) with 10.6%.
