Sydney: Kiis stays top in FM despite across the board drops as 2DayFM’s fortunes rise
KiisFM’s dominant breakfast duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson saw their audience share slip once again by more than a percentage point while 2DayFM breakfast duo Rove McManus and Sam Frost made modest gains in the latest radio survey.
Kyle and Jackie O’s show dropped 1.4 percentage points to a share of 9.9, while Rove and Sam picked up 0.3 points to a 3.3 share, the highest since they took to the airwaves at the end of last year, in a decent survey for the Southern Cross Austereo pop station.
What is it with Mumbrella’s fixation on FM? You don’t even mention AM stations in your editorial but if you look on the graphs, the top two performers need an extra scale to appear – far and away outperforming all the FM stations.
Not everyone who listens to radio is an air-head, not concerned about what is happening in their world. Some (in fact, the majority!) listen to AM stations for their news, current affairs, etc etc.
Hi Rrrosco,
As we explain every time we do radio ratings there’s very little movement in the AM sector and therefore not a lot that’s newsworthy or interesting. Same thing happens again is hardly a great headline. There are a couple of pars in there about it nearer the bottom, but with the FM market in a state of flux (and handling the more attractive advertiser demographics) it’s where the main story is at the moment from our perspective.
Cheers,
Alex – editor, Mumbrella
But isn’t 2gb also number 1 in Sydney for advertising revenue, same goes for 3aw in Melbourne. I would call that advertiser friendly, wouldn’t you
So Alex, perhaps acknowledge the consistency of the Sydney and Melbourne AM talk stations, (2GB & 3AW), at the beginning, rather than burying their performance in passing at the end of your reporting. 3AW’s result in particular is, yet again, outstanding, but your reportage is almost dismissive in its brevity. Your assertion that the FM stations are “handling the more attractive advertiser demographics” sounds more like the subjective perpetuation of a myth than actual revenue share-based fact. This ain’t the daily Oztam numbers TV style … it’s only eight times a year!
ARN won’t be happy with the Melbourne results, two failing breakfast shows in their stable – ouch.
It’s all well and good to place these shows overall, but all these stations appeal to different audiences. A breakfast show may be 5th or 6th overall (thus considered failing), but if it’s number one for the demographic, then it’s not failing, it’s succeeding in appealing to it’s target audience.
@Damien, that is very true. But if you work for a commercial radio network you know everyone wants to be number 1 10+, not just in the demo they state is their target. After all, more people equals more revenue. And unless you have a clearly defined brand, like Triple M does with men, it’s a harder sales proposition.. number one for single suburban mums between 43-47 is not a demo agencies often buy.
Until the press releases come out, then it’s “we’re #1 with married mums 24 – 32 with 2.4 kids and a dog”.
So our show is ” Lewis and Lowe” …
Not ” Lewis and Lower”
Sooo…..Yeah..
Apologies for the error, Shane. It has been corrected.
Simon – you could easily make a fortune selling advertising for dating websites (think eHarmony and RSVP) if you were the No.1 station for single mums aged 43 – 47. And teeth whitening toothpaste. And Special K breakfast cereal. And anything that vibrates.
I didn’t realise that the FM market was any different to the AM market insofar it is the Radio market in each state but unfortunately your people have a propensity to treat FM as different to the AM market. 3AW breakfast has nearly 3 times the audience than your MMM breakfast!!!!!!!!
If you are going to report facts, get them right. Adelaide Radio has “Jodie and Soda”, not Julie and Soda!!!!!!!!!!
In the Sydney ratings, you typed about Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwood and Marty Sheargold. I think it is meant to be Tim Blackwell not Blackwood.
