REA Group makes redundancies as overseas competitor looms

News Corp’s REA Group, parent company of realestate.com.au, has confirmed a number of job losses in its technology team, as it moves its development to India.

The company confirmed a restructuring of internal teams has resulted in a “limited number of redundancies which in total impact less than 4% of our technology team”.

In 2022, REA Group employed over 500 developers, which would equate to around 20 redundancies — if the team has remained the same size.

“We continue to manage our operations to ensure we position REA for long term growth,” a REA spokesperson said in a statement.

“By simplifying our team structures to create faster and more flexible ways of working we can continue to deliver the best outcomes for our consumers, customers and shareholders. The proposed changes will speed up decision making, align delivery practices, enhance capability and ensure consistency in roles across the business.

“This creates better career paths for our talented team.  As part of these changes there are promotion opportunities, redeployment to new roles and a limited number of redundancies which in total impact less than 4% of our technology team.”probes the company’s pricing model.

REA Group said its development team in India is an “extension of our team in Australia, and ensures we have the right mix of skills and technology in place to execute on our ambitious strategy and deliver even greater value to our consumers, customers and shareholders”.

This decision comes as US real estate giant Costar finalises its purchase of REA’s main competitor, Domain, and the ACCC

Despite these distractions, the company remains in rude health. REA Group enjoyed a 20% year-on-year revenue jump and a 26% increase in net profit in the six months to December 31. The company has a market value of $32 billion — a figure that has quadrupled in the past decade, and dwarfs Domain’s recent valuation of $3 billion.

In addition, realestate.com.au is visited by 12.3 million users each month.
