Return of The Checkout up on second series but Redfern Now falls flat
The return of The Checkout on ABC last night grabbed 727,000 viewers for ABC, however the return of Redfern Now could only muster 456,000 viewers.
Last night’s episode of The Checkout saw the team look at the realities of clinical trials, and was up slightly from the 716,000 who tuned in for series two, whilst Redfern Now, which has had two series, was shown as a 90-minute telemovie.

Gogglebox on Channel Ten also saw an uptick in audience with 518,000 viewers last night at 8.30pm, after getting 471,000 last week. It was also the second most time shifter show of last Thursday with 94,000 more metro viewers over the seven days, according to OzTam overnight ratings.
Considering how brilliant Redfern Now was last night – great script, performances and direction – they are quite disappointing viewing figures. Deborah Mailman was incredible (as was all the cast). If you didn’t see it I’d recommend catching it on iView. IMHO one of the best dramas I’ve seen in a long time – locally produced or not. Takes a lot to get this cynical old bastard crying.
Doubt Redfern numbers are really down. Just not that many people watched it when it was on programmed TV – people will get to in their own time as is the massive trend and whoever wrote the headline knows that – let’s see how many people have watched the show this time next week. It’s a quality show. Deserves a more realistic headline.
I’ll check it out, Mr Scott
I’m not saying the Redfern Now telemovie was bad (it wasn’t), but the trailer made it look like a god-awful morose melodrama. ie. the sort of thing that Australian audiences avoid like the plague when it’s a movie at the cinema. If the ABC had cut a better trailer it might have achieved better ratings. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the TV series settle around the 400,000 viewers mark? So it’s not like it lost viewers.
totally agree with Hmmm. Deborah Mailman was amazing in the scene where she makes a call to say she’s being raped. Credit to the director as well.
Tis such a shame that Australia is one of the highest illegal downloading nations. I get it, if they only ever turn on main stream crap, but for gods sake, check out your independent channels! Redfern now, last night was a brilliant example of quality australian TV! We want more!
I have not watched Redfern Now but the impression I have is that it’s brilliant television about depressing subject matter. It’s just not what I’m looking for after a day a work. Not every thing has to be comedy obviously but it all looked a bit too grim for me.
I get what you mean Billy. Hope you don’t watch shows like Breaking Bad then.
