SBS blames government budget cuts as it walks away from industry body Freeview
SBS has blamed budget cuts for its decision to withdraw from Freeview, in a move described by the free-to-air TV body as “surprising and disappointing”.
The public broadcaster said it needs to cut costs after the Government sliced $53.7m from its budget over the next five years, with its exit from Freeview identified as one area it can save cash.
“This funding reduction has impacted SBS’s ability to comply with funding obligations associated with Freeview shareholding,” SBS said in a statement.
who even uses freeview? lol
The SBS OnDemand app for iOS has great content but it’s THE WORST streaming app out there right now. It’s buggy torture!
You have to take your hat off to the free to air broadcasters and therefore their organisation “Freeview”. Desperate to repeat the mistakes of the past; again.
You would have thought Freeview would have learnt the importance of partnering with the industry who creates the products that supports HbbTV. Instead they have two of four key CE brands. Where’s Samsung and Panasonic?
You would have thought Freeview would have created a model that was fair on big and small members. Nope
Instead Freeview are trying to make out Freeview is free to air TV… meanwhile there’s this catch-up TV functionality on some products, from some brands, for some channels.
