SCA denies it is building a ‘war chest’ to bring back Kyle and Jackie O to 2DayFM
Southern Cross Austereo rejected a report it is looking to slash costs and sack staff in an effort to build a $20m “war chest” to bring back breakfast hosts Kyle and Jackie O to 2DayFM.
The Sunday Telegraph claims Southern Cross Austereo management is “forensically analysing” ways to amass the funds to lure back the breakfast duo to its struggling Sydney flagship station 2DayFM. Their departure in 2013 for ARN’s KiisFM saw 2DayFM fall from first to last in the FM rankings as Kiis grabbed top spot.
On Sunday morning, Southern Cross Austereo denied the report, with a spokeswoman saying: “SCA is not in discussions with Kyle and Jackie O to return to 2DayFM, or any other station in the Hit Network. (It is) completely untrue, we are not dumping staff.”
For goodness sake. SCA have to stop investing breakfast shows that don’t sound good. Pay Sophie Monk a million bucks and team her up with someone “outside the box” such as Peter Moon.
The best breakfast shows have an edge. Doug Mulray was twice the age of his audience. Wendy Harmer and Peter Moon hated each other.
SCA have to stop serving up sugar-sweet breakfast options and get something interesting on the air. And soon. Like now.
It’s a ridiculous story.
For $20M SCA could get anyone they wanted in the world – why would they get an expiring talent like KS&JO.
What about Mick Fanning and Sophie Monk ?
Well if its in the daily telegraph with a anonymous radio industry source central to the story then it must be what’s happening….. Cmon people, we are better than that! I do however like the backhanded comment from the spokeswoman from SCA aimed squarely at K&J when she said Rove and Sam “They are a perfect fit for our positive culture and team environment.”
The Rove Show is dead in the water, SCA know it and they will throw Sam Frost overboard within weeks as a diversion.
The wise radio heads know there is only one way to resolve the breakfast problem (which is actually a Group revenue problem) and that is bring back K&J. Hence the speculation.
There is only room for one under 40’s, K&J, and one over 40’s, Alan Jones in Sydney. ( Ask the Nova breakfast team) So big they take listeners with them.
Rove wont deliver the goods if he stays there for ten years. So, SCA should be and I have no doubt ARE negotiating to bring K&J back. If they are not, then the misjudgement is worse than putting Rove on Breakfast, with an inexperienced sidekick, in the first place…
I noticed none of the SCA executives put their name to the denial. Just reads ” An SCA executive said ” Well played. Leaves things fairly wide open.
As Venus Williams said ” I guess rumors are more exciting than the truth”.
