7NEWS weather presenter, Angie Asimus, has landed a new hosting gig that will see her take the weekend anchor seat beside long-time anchor, Michael Usher.
On Friday morning, the network announced that Asimus – whose career with Seven began 16 years ago where she covered regional news in Townsville – will co-anchor the Sydney iteration of 7NEWS on Saturday and Friday evenings on 7plus and Channel 7, live from 6:00pm onwards.
The journalist will retain her position as 7NEWS Sydney weather presenter, with appearances covering Sundays through to Tuesdays when fellow hosts Angela Cox and Mark Ferguson are at the desk.
“I’ve worked on every news bulletin at the network in some capacity, at every hour of the day, from reading Sunrise news to reporting live on The Latest,” Asimus said.
“This next chapter is a dream come true. To be appointed weekend co-anchor of our flagship 6.00pm news bulletin alongside Michael Usher is an enormous privilege and I plan to continue working hard to deliver the news to our loyal Sydney and NSW viewers.
“Journalism has given me a front row seat to so many memorable moments in history, and now I’m taking up a different seat next to someone whom I respect immensely.
“Michael and I have worked together in the newsroom for many years, and I think we’ll make a great team on the news desk. I’m thrilled and can’t wait to get started.”

Usher expressed his excitement at Asimus’ inclusion at the news desk, praising her reporting and presenting skills.
“What a great appointment and promotion for Angie! It’s a great move for her and for 7NEWS,” Usher said.
“I’m excited about co-anchoring the Friday and Saturday 6.00pm bulletins with Angie. I know our viewers are very fond of her because she’s a terrific news presenter and reporter, and I think we make a good team.
“I’ve always admired Angie’s class in handling live news from stressful events like floods, bushfires and cyclones. She now brings all that experience from wild outdoor reporting to the studio news desk.”
Seven West Media’s editor-in-chief and the Seven Network’s director of news and current affairs, Anthony De Ceglie, added: “Angie is one of the most respected news people in the country, and I’m confident that together with Michael, they will bring a fresh new energy to Sydney’s weekend bulletins.
“Their partnership further strengthens our already outstanding presenting team, keeping viewers informed and delivering trusted coverage across all seven days.”
The Usher and Asimus duo are set to officially grace screens starting Friday evening.
Asimus’ appointment comes roughly two weeks after the network announced that it had chosen Seven Spotlight reporter, Sarah Greenhalgh, to pick up the co-anchor reins alongside Max Futcher at 7NEWS Brisbane after long-time presenter, Sharyn Ghidella, was let go in July.
“Max has been an incredibly supportive colleague and mate of mine for the past 11 years now, so to be sharing the news desk with him while also returning home to my original 7NEWS family is a huge thrill,” Greenhalgh commented at the time of the announcement.
“Sharing people’s stories remains my greatest passion, so in addition to delivering the news to Queenslanders each night, I look forward to continuing investigations with the 7NEWS Spotlight team as well.”
Really pleased to hear Angie coming on board as an anchor. I truly hope that Michael Usher can stop staring at Angie when she gives her segments because I am not the only regular Channel 7 viewer that believes it looks weird and creepy.
If Mark looks as his news companions it is with a smile of reassurance and support but Mike looks a bit creepy.
