Sick of all the World Cup ads? Here’s something that’s actually entertaining
There have been a lot of World Cup-themed ads released in recent months and Mumbrella particularly liked the effort by Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam for Nike.
But with the good, has also come a whole lot of bad and bland.
This one from Coca-Cola, a FIFA partner, is a good example of not just your straight forward TV ad, but is a bit of branded content.
And it’s content that, as a non-football fan, actually grabbed my attention and made me laugh.
It features British comedian James Corden of Gavin & Stacey fame and footballer Wayne Rooney.

Meh. Tedious, obvious, telegraphed humor that’s way too drawn out. Par for James Corden’s course really.
Excellent!!
Have the Aussies got their World Cup chant ready? “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie…” 😉
The Yanks have got theirs’ ready: “U.S.A, U.S.A…”
I love the World Cup!!
A slow burn but once you punch through the pain barrier it’s quite funny
Using the term comedian and tying it in with James Corden is bizarre. The guy is about as funny as the Adidas/Star Wars cantina ad.
Shut up Scott.
Would have been far better in 60 seconds.
@Scott Rhodie yes before i watched the clip i would tend to agree with you (on your point about James Corden that is, the Star Wars ad is SO NOT comparable). However as @Andrew said give it a minute or so and its actually quite hilarious. Also, given that i am generally a non-football fan it made three minutes of my lunch hour quite entertaining.
I thought it was great, made me laugh! And I love James Corden!
Great Ad, what has Australia produced oh yeah Tim Cahill eating Weetbix!
Not a patch on his previous effort:

Now that’s funny.
Scott, your just jealous Scotland failed to qualify (again!)
Oh Camille. When you leave i shall miss your constant squabbling with Scott – especially on the podcast!
it is a tad long, but worth the wait, love the look on James’ face at the end
I am girl with not a lot of interest in soccer football, and I’m not the target market so I guess it doesn’t really matter it didn’t appeal to me….
I’m sure english soccer football mad boys will love…
Bit slow… bags of talent and opportunity. Missed the mark really.
too long and it’s not the real thing when we know that its not actually wayne doing the stunt at the end. Don’t get me started on the annoying fan. As a veteran of world cup ads, thsi is rotten. See “the Secret Tournament’ 2002. Awesome.
Grrr can I have that 3 minutes back please 😕
Meh!
The whole routine is lifted from ‘The Birdcage’, where Robin Williams’ character does the same thing, but manages to be both smarter and funnier.
It’s a bit of light entertainment. Chill out. What’s with all the moaning. Just take it at face value, smile, and move on.
