SMH gets NYC confused with Barcelona during terrorist coverage

Selecting an image during a breaking news story is difficult – a problem Dr Mumbo notes The Sydney Morning Herald experienced today when an image of the New York Police Department was used during the unfolding event in Barcelona.
The image has since been updated, with all references to the NYPD removed.
Yup, well that’s what happens when you ship your most experienced people out the door, cut corners on subbing and quality control, and leave the juniorburgers in charge…
Thank god you noticed this. Imagine if this had gone unreported.
If this was the front page of the SMH, print version, 20 years ago – it simply would not have happened, or would have been signposted ‘stock photo’… Poor and sloppy, however, sadly, when talent moves (is moved) on, this is the outcome. At least Fairfax seem to not promote hate, like their rival seems to do though.
Oh dear … could it be that “Imagine” is actually one of those self-righteous little churnalists at our ABC? Who else would attempt to turn a funny little story about a ***k-up at their friend Fairfax into a paranoid rant against Rupert?
Another major let’s-get-rid-of-experienced-staff fail by Fairfax: transposing the Wallabies and NZ scores in the Sun-Herald yesterday.
@ex ABC
What a strange comment? What makes you think I was having a dig at Rupert? The Mail surely wins the hate award and is bigger online than Rupe’s these days, isnt it? (Both owned by billionaires mind…)
Then there was the picture of a Hercules (four-engine prop transport) to illustrate the Pentagon deciding to keep the Warthog (twin-jet ground attack fighter). You might expect it in Fairfax, who are bigger on SM and SSM than SSBs, but it was in The Australian!
