Snap has turned to the agency world for its new Australia and New Zealand communications lead, Georgie Wilson.
Wilson joins the digital platform from independent PR agency History Will Be Kind, where she was a senior account director working across clients including Etihad Airways, Google and Uber.
Reporting to Natasha Brack, Snap’s APAC director of communications, Wilson steps into a role previously held for three years by Claire Robinson, who departed for Roblox in November.
Speaking to Mumbrella, Wilson said the move was a natural fit.
“Throughout my career, I’ve always been closely connected with technology and fintech brands, so this move made so much sense for me at a really exciting time for the business,” she said.
“I’ve long admired Snap, and I’m proud to join the brand and the team here.”
Originally from the UK, Wilson previously worked at London-based agencies Stand Agency and MHP Mischief.
She joined History Will Be Kind in Sydney as an account director in September 2022, before being promoted to senior account director two years later.
Speaking about the shift from agency to an in-house team, she added: “This felt like the right time to make the next step in my career.
“It feels like a great acknowledgement of how much I’ve learnt working in agencies. It’s a new challenge that I’m ready to grasp with two hands.”
Wilson’s arrival at Snap follows a turbulent year for the platform, which, like other global social media giants, had grappled with the Australian government’s under-16s social media restrictions.
Snap, which has a significant youth following, became the second platform in Australia to implement age verification measures ahead of the amendment to the Online Safety Act, which banned under-16s from having social media accounts in Australia.
A month later, it launched its Family Centre features, which aimed to give parents insight into how teens use the app and additional context on new friend connections.
