Stephen Mayne and the perils of crossing a picket
When journalist, shareholder advocate and former Melbourne City Councillor Stephen Mayne decided to submit a story to The Age on the Melbourne City Council budget and Tweet proudly about his story just after Fairfax journos had walked out in protest over redundancies, Dr Mumbo reached for the popcorn.
The response was almost immediate from one of the Fairfax team standing on the picket.

This whole ‘journalism under threat’ thing with @FairfaxMedia strike feels a lot like ‘music being under threat from iTunes’ circa 2003.
It is remarkable that Mayne has managed for so long to be a media hero when in fact he has demonstrated very many times that he is both a narcissist and a backstabber. Hopefully this effort will finally cruel his appeal.
Spot on. Maybe the ABC – who have him on all the time – might wake up to this self-publicist.
Mayne skirts the edges rather than sits in the middle of things and disagree with @Tool that he’s a media hero. He’s more interesting to have around than not.
Made a mistake, dug in and capitulated all in stereo. Nice one doc.
I kind of agree that the strike is too long.
Journos have been sitting pretty for a long time, while the rest of us in the real world deal with job insecurity, market pressures and regular job losses.
The newspaper business model is basically f***d – and striking won’t help that situation.
That said though, I do worry about a world with no decent journalism.
This whole saga is just a load of bollocks.
“Sorry… not sorry”
No such thing as bad publicity – and that works for both arguments.
So long as he comes good with the beer money, everyone will soon get over it.
“Scab”? Wow. Suddenly I’m back in Wapping c. 1984.
On ya, Mayney
Stephen is a pissant. Some days he plays capitalist logician. Other days he is the caped lefty crusader. These days he forgets which. Hence the confusion.
As he gets more unwanted and desperate I predict nude runs at the AFL grand final.
As you’ve embedded screenshots rather than the tweets I don’t have the pleasure of educating Peter Logue that bankrupting Fairfax or not producing content is probably not the best way to stick it to Rupert Murdoch.
May I have some of your popcorn?
