Ten loses Formula One TV rights to Foxtel, keeps Australian Grand Prix
Network Ten has lost the rights to all but one of the Formula One races to Foxtel and Fox Sports.
Aside from the Australian Grand Prix, which will remain on Ten for at least two years, Fox Sports now has the exclusive rights to every Formula One race, including the Monaco Grand Prix and British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
In 2015, Fox Sports signed a five year deal to share the F1 broadcast rights with Ten.
Foxtel having the exclusive rights to these events is like buying a Ferrari, leaving it in the garage and occasionally bragging about how great it is to own one.
Except the Ferrari will still appreciate in value. Same can’t be said for Foxtel rights.

This absolutely sucks!!!!! If this is happening Foxtel Now should at least offer a stand alone Sports package instead of it being a premium package added onto another package. Makes it hard otherwise for true fans to be able to afford to follow their passion.

So this explains why the Malaysian GP was not shown on ONE even though it was listed in the TV guide this week. I do not agree at all with comments saying we must pay for quality product. Having to pay for something which has been free in the past is totally unacceptable in my opinion. What rotten times we live in.

Spot on mate! Every time I do a free trial fox and then cancel, I tell them it is too expensive to pay 40-60/month to watch F1 & GP. But they don’t care. It’s all about money for them.
I am so angry. I love my F1 and have been watching for nearly 40 years. Just because I am one of the majority that cannot afford Foxtel no-one cares about us. Money and greed that’s all it is.

Its likely to have been part of the costcutting program worked out before the sale. The idea that News would have kept it is laughable.

F1 has been going downhill for a long time now, Bernie saw to that. 2015 deal was already nonsence but you could deal with it. I was hoping that with Liberty Media’s takeover of F1 we would see some improvements and possibly ability to subscribe and watch it all online. I suppose it all remains the same, about money. So I say Goos luck Foxtel. You won’t be seeing my dollars and cents. You are playing catchup to Netflix because of your broken business model. Inevitably you will be playing catchup again sooner or later.
I am disgusted with chanel 10. We have no choice now to watch the grand prix. If you do not have foxtel bad luck.
Agree with Anon, Ch10 have totally mucked around with F1 TV scheduling for long time now, promised & not delivered, not even advised! Now on behalf of the freetv watchers they have wrecked it all, except AustGP, wonder how long that broadcast debacle lasts.
How long before MotoGP goes the same way…….

Ten’s Monday highlights last year were absolute rubbish. At best it was a random and disjointed collection of nothing in particular. It often looked like whoever did the editing simply had no interest in F1. It surprises me that F1 allowed such a shoddy production to air their brand.
Ten have always been rubbish when it comes to sport. That’s why they aren’t a serious proposition for the cricket rights.
At least Ten still have Rugby and basketball that nobody cares about or watches. Maybe they should stick to high quality shows like the Crapchelor and Crapchelorette and leave the proper TV to the grown ups.
Anyone who couldn’t see this coming 2 years ago was either blind or kidding themselves. V8 Supercars is next to go to Foxtel, they do it 100 times better and in hd anyway
Channel 10 was going down the gurgles for years due to poor management and programming decisions, this is another one.
If you are a motoring enthusiast and supporter and enjoy tv coverage of events you are now missing out unless you subscribe to the monster called Foxtel, isn’ t this a form of forced marketing which is illegal

The loss of fre to air of the grad prix zucks. Not everyone can afford pay tv. But we like our motor sport. One more reason I refuse to buy your pay tv prices. You have lost more viewers.
They could have at least allowed Channel Ten to finish off 2017 with the usually broadcast F1 races ! What an absolute disgrace. Most people don’t have Foxtel and never will.
This is pure $$$$$$ grabbing. Sport should always be free to air. Sport was invented to guide the energy of the young to rules, regulation and sharing, instead off being left to their own resources, eg. Gangs, War, Theft, Corruption. Plus as one gets older, to remember past involvement, share with family and friends. Now all gone, stolen by big business, Oh well, advertising has been lost now, wonder how sponsorship will continue. Que Sera.
Why not do this at the end and not mid season?
Because CBS are in the driving seat at Channel 10 Foxtel have spat the chewie and taken their F1 “bat and ball” and gone home.
If they want my money Foxtel will need to offer an affordable package for me and my fellow F1 fans.
Shame channels 7 or 9 didn’t have the F1.
Foxtel has paid F1 a whole lot of cash and Foxtel will now try take that from Australian F1 fans… thanks a lot Foxtel!! Foxtel, you will never get a cent from me, I hope this deal is as bad for you as it is for Australian F1 fans. What value does Foxtel add for paying customers… it’s just greedy.

To be honest, F1 has been boring as hell for the last 5 years.
Rules discouraging overtaking and team budgets that allow one team to become completely dominant like Red Bull from 2010-2014 and Merc from 2014-Current.
Then there’s the sound. It’s pretty sad that you go to Albert Park and the V8 Supercars and Carrera Cup cars are louder than the Formula 1 cars. Gone are the days where you could clearly hear the cars from 5km away.
I have been streaming it via easily found SKY UK mirror sites on the net for free for several years. Moto GP is a far better sport and if it weren’t for Dan I wouldn’t give 2 forks about F1 any more.
No more F1 for me the. Shame because F1 and MotoGP were the only motorsport I like to watch. I don’t have NBN in my area yet and present ADSL is crap. Not gonna pay heaps to watch lots of rotating arrows. Thanks a million Channel Ten and Turnbull

TEN hardly show any of the Supercars LIVE anymore. I can only hope that MOTOGP will remain on FTA.
As a PS – when I rang TEN on Saturday having noticed the Malaysian GP had been deleted all she could tell me that “highlights” were scheduled for late Monday night. All that gives is about 40 minutes of racing, 20 minutes of ads and promos. TEN should have put some sort of advance announcement on their TEN Motorsport Facebook site – but I suppose it is a bit too much to expect a “communications company” to actually communicate! It seems like it must have been a very last minute decision as the GP was listed on the electronic schedule until very late in last week.
Ch 10 Northern NSW were still advertising F1 on Saturday & even on Monday night advertising the replay at 12.15 am Tues.

I have been disgusted with 10 eversince they started the last restricted deal on F1. I cant afford Fox especially given that F1 would be the only program i would want to take up. I have been living with the F1 Live24 app so its back to that.

Anyone who has watched the Foxtel F1 coverage would know what a superb job they have done. You don’t get just the race with some avg outdated commentary, you get full coverage of all practice and qualifying sessions LIVE, awesome interviews and the race is always LIVE not delayed due to other viewing commitments by TEN. As a long time F1 fan FOXTEL has given us what the rest of the world has.
I agree that Foxtel probably do a better job of broadcasting, but I refuse to pay $500 per year just watch F1-because that is the only reason I would have Foxtel! Their business model is ridiculous and I refuse to pay for a streaming service full of ads……
I gave in and subscribed around this time last year. Once you do you’ll find the F1 coverage on Foxtel is great. You get all the practice and qualifying sessions as well as the race. Get the HD package, which is extra, because the SD looks horribly soft and is unwatchable. I hardly watch any free to air now. Thanks Ten!

Ever since ten signed with Foxtel, I’ve been streaming all the races. Much better than Foxtel or channel ten!
Hey, this is no surprise. You just have to follow the progressive links to today’s situation. Bernie started it all with his personal greed. He sold commercial / marketing right to CVC which he (initially) controlled then through CVC the rights got on-sold to SKY and Fox cable TV years ago where the f-t-a stations got the scraps and coverage commenced diminishing to its present state. CBS may have bought the TEN network but is hardly likely to show F1 as, in the USA, I am fairly sure NBC had the f-t-a rights. Nothing in it globally for CBS if they only get Oz. Expect the same with the Supercars and MotoGP soon. This is commercialised blackmail for the poor old viewer who doesn’t want any of the other rubbish served up in cable “packages”.
Today’s lesson in free market economics.
Free markets are supposed to cause fierce competition between businesses to win the patronage of customers by providing better products and services and thus businesses become highly efficient and produce better products at cheaper prices. So the consumer is the big winner.
But noted free marketeer Rupert Murdoch (i.e. Foxtel) pursues exclusive rights to sporting events and other “products” so that he can control the price which in turn guarantees high profits for Newscorp.
So much for his belief in the free markets. If he really did believe in the free market, he would allow anyone and everyone to televise all sporting events and the market would watch the best tv coverage or at least the coverage that they liked the best. The better suppliers of tv content would thrive and the others would wither away unless they lifted their game.
thats why i have a UK subscription with skytv for the F1, watch it online, get upto 8hrs of coverage raceday and no adds while the race is running
What an absolute disaster for Motorsports fans
The one thing I watch on 10 and you’ve taken that away …. let’s see more mindless drivel like ego driven silicon bimbos falling passionately (as you would have us believe) with bad boys who are more in love with their own reflection than any brainless but none the less attractive offering. 10 years ago, Ten was the only commercial station to watch and today it continues to teeter on the edge of extinction. Well giving away any quality offering is sure way to seal your fete. And I hope Ten goes out of business sooner than later, and not just for giving F1 away, but the way you systematically dumb down your audience. Even to the point of your news, weather and sports presenters, being too lazy or too stupid to speak their colleagues names without abbreviating. Stick all your cooking, singing, dancing and mind numbingly pathetic current affairs in the vacuum created by giving away the F1 coverage .

You guys sure know how to trash a sport, doncha? The “All Imp-ortant” Sydney Motorsport Park Supercars under lights event received virtually no publicity or coverage on Ten, even in the TV guides. Apparently a ‘highlights’ package will be put together for showing Sunday (?) for all the States that don’t matter (ie all but Sydney, Sydney Sydney).
Let’s hope when the FoxtelTen contract is done there will still be motor sport left In this country and a viewing audience. Disgraceful.
