The SMH’s big national news of the day: man finds corn flake that looks like Australia
Regular Fairfax followers will be aware that boss Greg Hywood has set a very clear path for the company – its future lies in high quality journalism.
So it’s good to see the top story in the national section of smh.com.au this morning.
As Dr Mumbo’s spy tells him: “”If this is the top story under national for the SMH today, I think the Rivers of Gold company must be very close to the end!”
Jack Matthews at work. Hywood is too busy giving speeches to know what’s happening in the newsroom.
Great headline though…
But how good is that cornflake??
…and can I see Jesus’ face over Broken hill? He’s kinda cracking a ‘what you talkin’ bout Willis’ expression.
The SMH online is now a tabloid. I am amazed why on earth they have changed it into a tabloid online? As a result of this dramatic change; I have had to go to the ABC and SBS sites to receive any credible Australian news online. (I just dont want to view Murdoch associated publications; so sorry The Australian, but you are now off the list too…)
Typical. Tasmania is again left out.
The SMH online used to stand out far ahead against the others. It is a national tragedy that it has collapsed to a slot just below the News of The World in journalistic priorities.
I find the ABC and SBS hard to find the main national stories. The Oz online is actually well structured, but you just can’t trust them.
Where can we get the whole story online in Australia now?
Come now, the SMH online is packed with important and serious news as well as the trivial and amusing; broadsheet fundamentalists have such a strait-laced view of what an online newspaper absolutely must be – just because there’s a harmless, kooky yarn about a cornflake in an inside section, does that invalidate all the serious High Court coverage at the top of the front page? You’d have to be stuck in an old paradigm not to notice that a newspaper website can be many things to many people at the same time – and none of them here are hideous, nasty beat-ups in the real tabloid tradition.
Couldn’t they have added a crumb for Tassie?
Reminds me of the episode where there was a squirel that looked like Abraham Lincoln.
Aussie papers seem to be using the Daily Mail online as a model for web presence.
Hi Tom,
No issue on the piece being on the site. But it was top story in the national news section.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
It’s vaguely like a map of Australia and some boofhead wants to sell it? Presumably some even bigger boofhead will buy it. Bloody hell – what’s the world coming to?
A little fun with your journalism is a good thing. Up north they are having a croc off!!
See what happens when they’re not allowed to publish stories like Mark Voegel anymore: http://www.abc.net.au/mediawat.....157350.htm, they have to come up with even lazier stuff.
Or is Australia….shaped like the corn flake?!
Batman – that looks more like the batman logo – maybe its a call for help
Get over yourself Mumbrella.
SMH online really is trying to be the Daily Mail … 12 hours later.
Today’s front page features a story about Amanda Holden. Sorry, who? Oh, the UK TV star no one in Australia has ever heard of? Of course.
