Triple M’s Moonman In The Morning to host domestic violence awareness special on Sunday

Triple M Sydney’s breakfast show Moonman In The Morning will host a one-hour special on Sunday titled Moonman Takes On Domestic Violence, calling on potential perpetrators to ask for help.
The move comes in the wake of ongoing headlines and concern around the murder of Hannah Clarke and her three children Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey by Clarke’s estranged husband.
There has also been scrutiny on the media’s handling of reporting around the issue, in particular outlets which framed the killer as an “ex NRL star” and loving father.
So we get to hear more from the perpetrators but not the victims. Come on MMM this has Pr disaster written all over it. You need to have the victims voice represented equally.
Only a couple of months ago Lawrence Mooney used his breakfast radio show on MMM to do a radio skit where he pretended to be Russell Crowe and joked about how intimidating Sam Burgess was while he was facing an AVO hearing…..
Someone who jokes about domestic violence to provide entertainment doesn’t seem like an appropriate choice of host to me.
Pick a side Lawrence, If you want awareness to be meaningful. Be serious about it first.
I think this is a good idea. A station targeting males, going to the heart of the problem. I am sure we will hear from victims, but how powerful hearing from perpetrators. If only one man takes notice and changes his behavior this is a success.

Whilst we applaud the attention Triple M is giving to this critical issue, we hold concerns around the program format and the potential impacts for victims/survivors of domestic and family violence.
Working with perpetrators of domestic and family violence is a highly specialised field and we would recommend that an expert accredited to undertake this work- (an accredited men’s behaviour change practitioner) be engaged in such conversations.
We would suggest that the program does not invite any caller from the public to engage in this conversation on a personal level without screening, risk assessment and follow up. The risk of escalation for victims without such are too high.

On the flipside, I appreciate the different approach they’re taking here — recognizing that there are people who know they’re capable of bad and know that they have to change and are willing to change. But then we live in times where people are absolutely not allowed to change, and are instead condemned to the depths of hell or something…
