TV execs defend Australian shows: ‘Quality is in the eye of the beholder’
Television executives from across Australia’s commercial broadcasters have pushed back against the suggestion they need to be bolder and more innovative with their content, saying formats like My Kitchen Rules and Have You Been Paying Attention? continue to reach audiences and get the job done.
At a Think TV Think Tank event in Melbourne, a panel with representatives from Nine, Ten, Seven and MCN was asked by an audience member: “When is Australia going to make quality international TV like Big Little Lies, and pull back some of that great Australian talent to be part of a great Australian program that becomes international? Who will be bold enough to do that?”

… if quality, innovation and creativity is defined by repetition, duplication and recycling of ideas.
Wentworth has been sold into 90 countries, not 10.
Good to see Nev Hasan knows nothing about his content.
This is the kind of comment that comes from the safe seats, protecting salaries and gripping the job straps.

Yes, but then margarine, sugary drinks, high fat fast food and salty snacks have sold well and got the job done for so called food producers, but they are hardly quality eating.
As producers, you should all be working at the business of producing quality and diversity with a view to lifting the game, not chasing numbers and fishing for ratings, simply by spoon feeding sweet tasting bait. Beware of overfeeding the cash cow with low grade fodder, it is the quickest way to kill it.
Not much goes up to the so called top, because nobody bothers to take risks and knuckle down to working at good theatrical production, much easier to catch what falls our way.
If you consider it to be “in the eye of the beholder” think about who the beholder is; it’s your audience, and your potential audience, and their eye can only behold what you cast before them.
