TVS begins digital broadcast

Sydney’s community television channel TVS has begun its digital broadcast on channel 44.

TVS is the first community station in Australia to begin simulcasting, after the Federal Government announced last year it would allocate vacant spectrum to community TV and $2.6m in funding to assist them to meet the costs of commencing digital transmissions.

Last year Encore documented community TV’s struggle to join the digital transition efforts.

TVS chief executive Laurie Patton said the transition was “essential”, because TVS complements other free-to-air networks and helps develop new talent. Patton expects that simulcasting (simultaneous analogue and digital broadcast) will increase TVS’s audience levels.
