Viewers stay up for late night tennis
The epic Djokovic – Nadal final in the Australian Open saw an audience increase on last year despite running to nearly 2am in the eastern states.
The match – which ran until 1.37 am – rated an average of 1.863m viewers, according to preliminary metro ratings from OzTam. This was up 34.7% on last year.
The audience for the lengthy five set game peaked at 2.803m, up by 43.5% on last year’s three set Djokovic – Murray final.
Meanwhile, the second “Super Sunday” of Ten’s early run into the ratings battle delivered the network solid results. All of the network’s key evening shows edged in above 1m viwers.
How did the ladies’ final rate?
Given that prize money is equal for both the ladies’ and gents’ titles these days it would be interesting to compare the potential revenue for a six-hour, five-set epic with the one-hour, two-set disappointment that preceeded it on the night prior.
I’m all for gender equality and whatnot but surely apples are being compared with cabbages in this case…
They should start the finals at 6pm, not 8.40pm
