Want to build your brand? Stop worrying about filming yourself and just do good work
While the rise of 24/7 video content might work wonders for some online marketers, the majority of us would probably be better off simply investing that time into our work, writes PR consultant Katie Clift.
I’ve been in professional agony for a few months now.
It’s not from lack of challenges or fulfilling campaigns – it’s been over something a little simple. Maybe even embarrassing. It’s the pressure of building a personal brand.
If you follow enough ‘thought leaders’, entrepreneurs, motivational coaches and small business strategists online, you’ll know there’s a current school of thought underscoring advice globally about being successful in media, marketing and public relations: building a solid, authentic, unwavering personal brand.
Ah, what a relief to read this. As a solo small business owner in early stage start up mode, trying to focus on creating content for Linkedin, Instagram, my own site, complementary sites..the list goes on. And creating content that’s both short & long form, written & video -urgh, it’s overwhelming & somewhat soul destroying. I joke with my husband that I spend more time crafting my brand than actually doing the work I want to do in the world. Thanks for showing me I’m not alone!
Thanks for your comment Claire! So happy you feel the same way – I have actually had so many comments and shares on this article, so it seems there are many of us in the same boat. I agree – there’s so many types of content people expect on different platforms, it is very hard to keep up – especially if you have clients on these platforms to help, as well as run your own channels.
Great advice. I’m always weary of experts who are pumping out their own marketing materials, when they should be focused on their clients. Like how most of the good marketing people have terrible websites.. Yes, us included!
