Why YouTube is Google’s next big play in social
YouTube’s latest page redesign is more than cosmetic says Nicola Swankie and here’s why you should take notice.
It seems just when users are wrapping their heads around the revamped design of social networks, they change again. And there has been a lot of noise recently about Facebook’s redesign, while quietly in the background YouTube has been planning to roll-out its own fresh look for channels called OneChannel.
This isn’t just a makeover for the video platform; it’s a significant play by Google to morph YouTube into a social network that could seriously compete with Facebook when it comes to the sharing of video content. There are three main reasons why this is significant for brands using social media as part of their marketing.
1. Facebook Open Graph Search
Thanks Nicola, good read.
Can you share an example URL where one can see a OneChannel page?
“YouTube has remained steady as a daily destination for Australians seeking video content”.
Do many people actually ‘seek video content’? Most people I know will happily watch a YouTube clip if it’s embedded in a Facebook post, or in an article. But I don’t think they go specifically to YouTube just to get their motion picture fix for the day.
Sure, this is Intel’s

You can see YouTube other showcased examples here

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Though from what i can see it has made YouTube a lot more interactive.
@thermalben. YouTube is 2nd to Google as the most popular search engine on earth.

TBH this article is just stating the obvious isn’t it? (I don’t mean any harm in this statement Nicola, however this is hardly revealing?)
This article was news to me, and a great overview. @youtuber, your last statement suggests that you assume all people working in advertising and marketing spend 100% of their time immersed in digital trends (which we arent). This is why there are social media specialists like Nicole – to inform the rest of us. Your criticism is pathetic and was uncalled for.
@carolyn – you work in advertising and don’t know YouTube is the second largest search engine??? YouTube is the go to for video search. End of story.
I Use youtube multiple times on a daily basis. However lately I have discovered the Mail/Inbox and the possibility of using it as a social media alternative. Not gonna happen. I am yet to accept a contact notification, and won’t until I understand wherethey are coming from.
@ Carolyn. Wow, so my sentence, as follows:
“TBH this article is just stating the obvious isn’t it? (I don’t mean any harm in this statement Nicola, however this is hardly revealing?)”
you deem “pathetic”?
I was purely (and I felt), nicely having my say. YouTube has been firing for many years now. It is pretty obvious that Google want to tie their products together to amass a powerful offering and stick it to some of the other social platforms.
I was not knocking Nicole, who I am sure is very successful at what she does, nevertheless I felt the piece, which aired on a platform for media / marketing / advertising people was pretty bland.
Hey ho, I will wander off to enjoy a pathetic weekend and drown my sorrows in a pathetic pub, drinking pathetic beer and perhaps watch a few pathetic video’s of pathetic Cat’s on pathetic video sharing sites, like YouTube, Break, Dailymotion or perhaps even Metacafe.
Just kidding with you Carolyn and have yourself a marvelous weekend 🙂
