Will Australia accept a new Survivor host?
Australian Survivor: Redemption premieres tonight on Channel 10, with the biggest host shake up in the program’s history, as David “Golden God” Genat replaces Jonathan LaPaglia.
The snuffing of a torch or the passing of the baton?
David Genat swears that when he announced his retirement from Survivor after being booted early from last year’s Australia v World series, he hadn’t yet been given the show’s hosting role.
“It’s just a bit of reality show serendipity”, he says of his nicely timed exit.
“I wouldn’t say I hadn’t hoped that one day I’d be [hosting], but no I did not have the role when I said that,” he tells Mumbrella.
He seems aware that nobody really believes him. After all, as Genat was being voted out during the second episode of last year’s show, Channel 10 immediately issued a press release and social media post announcing that Genat would be replacing long-time host Jonathan LaPaglia, who had driven the show for ten years, in the following season.
LaPaglia’s axing had already been made public some weeks earlier, and the former host had hinted at his replacement in an emotional Instagram post, writing “Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a bitch!”
Survivor theorists quickly noticed that this was a direct quote from Genat’s first appearance on the show, and the rumour mill went into overdrive.
Facebook feeds and Reddit threads soon filled with conspiracy theories bemoaning the shady way it all played out. (“At last night’s tribunal, you could tell that David knew he was taking the top job from JLP”, one commentator wrote. “There was a pause and a look.”)
Genat plays down the stories, insisting that the Survivor host job was just another in a long line of auditions he’d been doing for “everything under the sun”.
He studied acting for five years in New York City, with original plans to be a dramatic actor before his success on Survivor “shaped things a bit differently.” He competed in 2019, won the following year, and returned for a third time in 2025 where the aforementioned drama played out.
“I think it’s the best job in television, so I feel very privileged to be in that spot — and to even have a chance to audition for it was pretty, pretty amazing,” he says of the hosting gig.
“I played it. I’ve lost it, I’ve won it. I got first-booted, and then for it to come full circle and be out there facilitating the game was incredible.”
Genat was conscious of not copying either LaPaglia or US host Jeff Probst’s hosting styles, and feels his history as a Survivor contender sets him apart.
“The foundations of that show are so set,” he says. “You’re not gonna change the obvious stuff. Jeff had his way he did it. John kind of did the same thing as Jeff, and then I got to evolve that. I just brought my take on it, as a player.
“I think, because no one’s ever really done that before, I could do it in a bit more of like a mentor-y way. There’s only one way to experience the full breadth of Survivor — and that’s as a player. So it gave me this pretty good insight that I think neither of those guys, or the other hosts, has had.
“I probably had a bit more empathy for [the competitors] in certain situations. I think I inspired them in other situations ’cause I can stand there and be like, ‘Hey, I did this. I did what you’re doing right now. I know it’s hard. But if you get through this, who knows? Maybe in five years you’ll be hosting Survivor.’
“I think, in some regards, that was pretty inspiring for the players. And, I looked after them. I made sure they were well taken care of and I advocated for them, and I think they really appreciated that.”
Genat spoke to Mumbrella during the liminal period when the show is complete but Australia is yet to give its verdict.
“I think they can expect the best season of Australian Survivor so far,” he says.
Genat has spent the past few weeks on a media tour of Australia, dropping into radio stations to drum up viewers for the show, so I’m tempted to write this off as hype. But he seems to believe it.
“I don’t say it lightly,” he says. “The game play this season, the players are just phenomenal.”
He admits to times when he wanted to jump in and compete, but thankfully resisted the urge.
“The players were going really hard and I’m just a huge fan of the show anyway, so I would do a bit of fan-fiction on what I hope would happen. Then they were doing stuff that my idiot savant brain for Survivor couldn’t even come up with. So I was always shocked. I was always enthralled by their gameplay and it was great.
“It was great to be a part of it and have a front row seat.”
Although Genat has retired from playing Survivor, he admits he’s been eyeing off The Traitors franchise, which returns to Channel 10 later this year with Gretel Killeen as host.
“I would love to do The Traitors,” he says. “We were in some talks last year about it, and if filming permits, I’d love to do that show.”

A TEN error.
